531 Brayley, Brewer, and Nightingale A topographical and historical description of London and Middlesex; Containing an account of the towns, cathedral, castles, antiquities, churches, monuments, ... notices of eminent and learned men (5 vols)
London Printed for Sherwood, Neely and Jones and G. Cowie 1810 Hardcover Very Good-
These five volumes are part of the 'Beauties of England and Wales', originally published in 25 volumes, and it states: 'the present proprietors have purchased the whole remaining stock and copyright and offer it to the public in separate counties'. All vols: Brown marbled boards, a little marked and scuffed. Brown leather half-binding, a little worn at edges; corners a little rubbed, but still fairly sharp; slight wear to heads and tails of spines, but backstrip very intact and binding tight. Raised bands; gilt titling + decoration a little dull, but still quite discernible. A library index mark has been inked in gilt at the base of each spine. Brown marbled pastedowns and endpapers; bookplate on each front pastedown; (different) owner's name beautifully inscribed (dd 1834) on the verso of each front endpaper. Library index no stamped on the verso of the dedication of vol I; the no is very occasionally stamped in the other vols, but there are no other library marks. Red coloured foredges; occasional spotting, but the pp are in general remarkably supple. There are no publication dates, but vol I has a printed dedication to the Lord Mayor and Aldermen of the City of London, dd Sept. 1810, and vol IV is dedicated to Charles Abbot, the (then) Speaker of the House of Commons, dd July 1815, so evidently these vols were published over several years. Incidentally, vol IV is actually Vol III, pt ii. Each volume is extensively indexed (people and places); in addition vols I, IV and V contain bibliographies, and vol IV also contains a long list of Additions and Corrections. B/w frontispieces with tissue guards + b/w engravings. The old county of Middlesex, which used to border London to the North and West, long ago vanished under the urban sprawl of the later 19th and early 20th Centuries, and in 1965 was anyway subsumed into the old Greater London Council. So this is a fantastic record of a largely rural county, in a time before the coming of the railways hastened the urban blight which overtook it, or even before the ordinary roads began to seriously benefit from Mr Macadam's pioneeering work. The incidental social and historical detail is merely the bonus which lends extra piquancy to this splendid set, which is in surprisingly good condition for its age.; 8vo (5 1/2" x 8 1/2"); 650 + 803 + 756 + 752 + 758 pages
