Dk blue boards; a little worn; some wear to backstrip, but binding very tight. Gilt decoration on front and spine still quite bright. Gilt foredges, bright. "First Prize" inscription in beautifully executed copperplate on front endpaper. B/w illustrations. A fascinating mid-19th Century guide to London. Interestingly, this book was published just before the Great Exhibition of 1851, so references to it are in the future tense - eg, "[Hyde Park] is to be the site of the Great Exhibition of the Industry of all Nations. It is impossible to imagine a nobler site, or a more convenient." There is also a section labelled "Metropolitan Railway Stations" - though as this was over a decade before the world's first underground railway - the Metropolitan Line - was constructed, the reference is actually to railway stations (principally, the great termini) in the metropolis. ; 8vo (5 1/2" x 8 1/2"); 860 pages
