Please note that this is a heavy item and will require extra postage.; Brown leather boards; a little scuffed and worn, but generally smooth; gilt decoration and titling still quite bright; light wear to lower part of spine, but binding firmly intact. Marbled boards and pastedowns. Owner's name on f.e.p., in lovely copperplate, dd June 16th, 1792. The book is undated, but the same hand has inked 1791 just below the publisher's name on the title page. The title on the spine says "Dryden's Virgil", but he is in fact merely one of the sources "carefully consulted and attended to" in Melmoth's preparation of the volume - among the others were Warton, Pitt, Spence, Warburton, etc., etc. Engraved frontis. + plates; fold-out map of the Roman world at front. Incidentally, the Directions to the Book-Binder were not followed too closely, as few of the plates were inserted as directed: some earlier hand (possibly the original owner) has carefully noted where each plate actually is, and inked in corrections. Lastly, and fascinatingly, bound in at the rear are two separate sets of closely handwritten quarto pages (about 40 in toto), once again in the most beautiful copperplate, presumably of commentary / notes on the text. ; 4to (9" x 11"); 497 + ads + list of sbscibers. pages
