Brown leather boards; somewhat worn, and a little rubbed; front board nearly detached - needs very careful handling - but binding otherwise intact. Raised bands on spine; gilt titling on red leather panel at head of spine. Lady M is most famous for her "Letters from Turkey", sent back home from the Ottoman Empire, where her husband was ambassador, and for introducing the idea of innoculation to the West. However, we owe all that to these satirical "court eclogues", composed while she was still a popular figure at the Court of George I - they were circulated without her knowledge while she was recovering from smallpox, as a result of which she was disgraced, and had to flee the Court to join her husband in the East. ; 8vo (4" x 7"); 180 pages
